Abstract | |
The present invention provides a method for the recovery of squalene from fatty acid distillate obtained from vegetable oil refining without destroying naturally occurring components in the distillate. Accordingly, the method of the present invention is comprised of: (a) neutralizing and removing free fatty acids contained in the fatty acid distillate using an alkali solution including sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide in the presence of a non-polar solvent; (b) hydrolyzing the neutralized fatty acid distillate obtained in step (a) in the presence of an enzyme at a temperature of 45?C to 80?C to obtain a hydrolysate containing free fatty acids; (c) adsorbing the hydrolysate containing free fatty acids obtained in step (b) onto a selective adsorbent to separate squalene from non-squalene components contained therein; (d) eluting the squalene obtained in step (c) from the adsorbent with a non-polar solvent to obtain an eluent enriched of said squalene; and (e) removing the non-polar solvent from the eluent obtained in step (d) to produce a concentrated squalene fraction. | |
